Lightning Talks: The evolving role of AI in development

Intent is the most valuable artifact in software.

Everything we build must keep that intent alive.

AI in development

At Codana, our foundation has been built for years on clear agreements. Quality and predictability are not accidental; they are the result of our structured way of working. Following workshops and analysis, we translate insights into rock-solid specifications featuring clear user stories and concrete acceptance criteria. These form the basis for all our web and mobile applications.

The central question during our last Lightning Talks was: How can AI help us make this process smarter, faster, and more reliable, without replacing our human expertise?

From specification to smart collaboration

A project always starts with a clear understanding of the what and why. But as development progresses, that initial context sometimes threatens to fade. With Spec Driven Development (SDD), we aim to both preserve and strengthen that knowledge.

AI serves here as an assistant, not as a replacement. Consider these applications:

  • Tickets and tasks: Automatic translation of specifications into clear, manageable tasks.

  • Code skeletons: Automatic generation of boilerplate code, among other things, allowing our experts to focus on the complex logic.

  • Tests and validation: AI writes or detects tests and edge cases, ensuring that the code delivers what the specification promises.

Sustainable software grows alongside the organization. SDD helps us keep the step from concept to code clear and traceable. By implementing AI, we can iterate faster, reduce risks, and establish a solid foundation for future growth.

The real added value for our clients

For clients, this primarily means significantly more predictability and quality. AI makes it possible to:

  • Provide faster insight into progress and risks

  • Manage complexity in larger projects

  • Continuously validate whether the solution still aligns with the original intent

In this way, we remain true to our promise: building software that is not only technically robust, but also sustainable and understandable, both today and tomorrow.

Walking on water and developing software from a specification are easy if both are frozen.

The foundation: Quality and predictability remain king

AI can accelerate processes, but quality and predictability remain the foundation. Our developers continue to serve as analysts, architects, and validators.

During the Lightning Talks, we emphasized that automation only becomes profitable when the foundation is solid. This means:

  • Logging: Consistent registration of system events.

  • Validation: Strict control of data input.

  • Error Handling: Clear, user-friendly feedback in case of errors.

Thanks to this governance, we can deploy AI safely and responsibly: the fusion of quality and innovation.

The common thread: Building trust

Whether it's about writing tickets or utilizing AI as an analysis assistant: everything revolves around trust. Not just in technology, but in each other.

At Codana, we use AI to deliver on our promise: to build software that is not only technically robust, but also earns the trust of our clients and users.

What's the next step? We continue to investigate how AI can help us strengthen even more components of the analysis and development process, from specification to maintenance. This is how we build quality software that is not only here today, but remains relevant tomorrow.
